What?
I’m going to be volunteering for the charity Bethesda Life Centre, working with children who are either orphaned or are children of AIDS/leprosy-affected parents or their parents are in the sex trade.
When?
January 17th 2018 for an unknown period of time.
Where?
Goa, the smallest state of India, to where Jason Bourne retreats at the end of The Bourne Identity to be with Maria. I have an apartment out on the beach, rented out to me by dear friends.
How?
Airplane.
Why?
It’s a decision I’ve not taken lightly, nor do I take the effects of such a decision lightly. I know what I’m giving up all too well. But after visiting certain parts of Goa and Mumbai in 2015, I felt a fraction of the vast extent of need in the world in a deeply tangible, spiritual and human way. The experience sounded a bass note in me. I had to do something. My first idea was to produce an album (which you can download here) to raise money for the charity, but I realised that the best way that I’m going to be able to truly help is to go there myself and do something… because I can.
Who?
I’ll be working voluntarily for Bethesda Life Centre, who run children’s care homes in Panjim, Goa. BLC provides shelter, clothes, food, a formal education, a family and a future to children who otherwise wouldn’t have any of that. There I’ll be teaching songwriting & music, helping the church’s band, cooking, cleaning, and doing general upkeep and admin. As Goa is home to one of India’s biggest music scenes, I’ll hopefully be giving some children a chance at a career as well as a means of expression.
